Frenotomy for tongue-tie in newborns
At Alliance Pediatrics® of Fort Worth, we understand how challenging breastfeeding can be for some newborns with a condition known as tongue-tie. Tongue-tie, or a short frenulum, occurs when the strip of tissue (the frenulum) connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth is shorter or tighter than normal. This can restrict tongue movement and make breastfeeding more difficult or uncomfortable for both the baby and mother.
What is a frenotomy procedure?
A frenotomy is a simple, safe procedure used to treat tongue-tie by releasing the frenulum. This involves making a small cut to free the tongue, allowing it to move more easily. The procedure is quick, often taking just a few minutes, and can significantly improve your baby’s ability to breastfeed. The best part is that this procedure is completely safe for your kid.
Consultation and evaluation
If you suspect that your newborn has a tongue-tie and is experiencing difficulty breastfeeding, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with us. During this consultation, our experienced pediatricians will examine your baby’s mouth and tongue movement to determine if a frenotomy is necessary. We will discuss the procedure with you in detail and ensure that all your questions and concerns are addressed.
What to expect during the frenotomy procedure
Frenotomy is typically performed in our office and does not require general anesthesia. The baby is swaddled for comfort, and a sterile tool is used to snip the frenulum. Most infants tolerate the procedure very well, and many can breastfeed immediately afterward, often with improved results. There is minimal discomfort, and recovery is usually very fast.
At Alliance Pediatrics® of Fort Worth, we are here to support you and your newborn through every step of the breastfeeding journey. If you think your baby may benefit from a frenotomy, please contact us to schedule a consultation.
